A vivid and vibrant painting “Parnassus” depicts gods, poets, nymphs and other heroes of Greek mythology and history. This is a very characteristic work of Poussin, which combines all the features of his artistic style. The plot of the canvas was adopted from the fresco by Raphael, decorating the Sistine Chapel.

Parnassus is the famous mountain in Greece, the abode of Apollo. Here inspiration, music and poetry are born. We see how a beautiful god is surrounded by muses and worshipers. Some hold musical instruments, books and laurel wreaths - a symbol of victory, glory and success.

Homer awards Apollo with such a wreath, in the image of which is a famous representative of Baroque poetry and close friend of the artist - Mr. Marino. The nude in the center of the picture is Castalia, a nymph who, according to legend, turned into a stream to get rid of Apollo's persistent attention.

Cupids depicting thickets with castal water are depicted in the lower part of the canvas. It is designed to give inspiration to artists.

The picture creates high spirits, leads to sublime thoughts. All thanks to the sealed atmosphere of prosperity and virtue, mutual respect and love for creativity. A large number of characters, an abundance of colors and details allows us to examine the picture with interest again and again.

Poussin uses a contrasting combination of warm and cold tones, and the technique of writing fabrics and clothes and the arrangement of the characters in a circle indicates the use of the traditions of Italian Renaissance painting. The artist was inspired by the talent of Titian and the aforementioned Raphael.

The work is a wonderful ode to the ancient Greek era, the main basis of which has always been the exaltation of man, his intellect, high morality and beauty.
