The canvas was created at a time when the artist wrote his best works. After his return to Germany, he worked in an atmosphere of revitalization of all types of art and attention to abstract painting among wonderful colleagues, which spurred the creative process and gave new ideas. At that time, the painter was dominated by the names of canvases associated with color or shape and the lack of objectivity and semantics. Vague images resemble a cipher hidden in geometric concepts.

Two significant configurations on the canvas “Black and Violet” are similar to sailing boats sailing along the calm sea on the right side, they are opposed to the dark, frightening cloud on the left, representing the fading world at the time of the eclipse. The impending storm has already overtaken the third boat - under the flag of our country. In this vein, the picture is interpreted as an illustration of Kandinsky’s departure from Russia.

However, the canvas has many interpretations. This was in line with the intention of the artist, who believed that understanding and appreciation of art are individual for each viewer who must find his essence in it. The usual interpretation of the picture is based on a description of the colors and forms left by the artist in his theoretical works. In two color centers, semantic centers are indicated: black and violet are crossed by even contrasting lines representing drama and even martial arts. This is comparable to the philosophical concept of the struggle of opposites, the duel of light and darkness, the opposition of life and death.

Another noteworthy interpretation is associated with the teachings of the creator of the interpretation of sound through graphic images. Guided by his understanding of sound, experts interpret the picture as an orchestra tuning their instruments. The sound goes into colors and forms, dominant, layered, contrasting with each other. These harmonies and cacophony must be perceived by the viewer and evaluate the consistency and inconsistency. Everyone can fantasize about a picture, but it should be remembered that in abstract art all meanings are eliminated, only a pure form is left: color, lines.
